Ahmad played a target board game at a carnival. He earns 5 points for every target that he hit accurately. For every 8 targets that he hit accurately, Ahmad also earns a bonus of 50 points. At the end of the game, Ahmad earned a total of 840 points. How many targets did he hit in the game? (3 marks)

Answer: 78 targets

Workings

1 target → 5 points 8 targets → 5 x 8 = 40points

1 group of bonus points and 8 targets → 50 + 40 = 90 points

number of groups bonus points and 8 targets → 840 ÷ 90 = 9 remainder 30

this means there are 9 groups of bonus points and 8 targets, with a remainder of 30 points

number of target from 9 groups → 9 x 8 = 72

number of targets from remainder 30 points → 30 ÷ 5 = 6

total targets → 72 + 6 = 78
