Question 6

Video explanation ↓

Jane had enough money to buy either 8 identical bags or 12 identical dresses. Each bag cost $15.30 more than each dress. How much money did Jane have? (3 marks)

Answer: $ 367.20

Workings

let b be bag let d be dress

"Jane had enough money to buy either 8 identical bags or 12 identical dresses."

8b = 12d

Each bag cost $15.30 more than each dress.

b → $15.30 + 1d

8b → $15.30 x 8 + 1d x 8 = $122.40 + 8d

since 8 bags is the same cost as 12 dresses

12d = $122.40 + 8d 12d - 8d = $122.40 + 8d - 8d 4d = $122.40 1d = 122.40 ÷ 4 = $30.60

12d (total money) → 12 x 30.60 = $367.20
