CHAPTER 01
Finding a different way to approach problem sums.
Ashley struggled with Section C open-ended word problems. Faustina said she often did not know where to start or which method to use.
Ashley had attended tuition and then worked with a one-to-one home tutor. Faustina had not seen enough improvement in her ability to tackle open-ended questions.
Faustina found Haris’s videos on TikTok. His systematic approach made difficult questions look easier to tackle.
Faustina wondered how maths models and working steps could be taught online, and what materials would be used.
CHAPTER 02
Methods, practice and feedback between lessons.
Ashley reported a Section C score of 31 out of 40, compared with an earlier score she recalled as about 11. This was a Section C comparison, not a total maths or PSLE score.
The explanations helped Ashley recognise when to use a model or the equal fraction method. Worksheets reinforced the methods covered in lessons.
WhatsApp feedback showed Faustina what had been covered, so she could follow Ashley’s progress without needing to ask her after each lesson.
CHAPTER 03
More willingness to attempt questions and practise.
Faustina noticed Ashley was more confident about attempting questions rather than leaving them blank. She also made a point of completing worksheets after each lesson.
She suggested giving the lessons a try: a different approach might help a child understand better. Her family found that online lessons could work for maths too.
